Tips for a sustainable wedding

I love weddings. I think they are so important and so fun. I have always appreciated them, but attending nearly 100 in the last few years has given me such a wonderful perspective on the industry. I’ve also noticed they aren’t always the most sustainable of events, understandably so! But, as a vendor who also values taking care of our planet where we can, I thought it would be cool to round up a few tips on ways to skew the day towards “better for the environment”. Here are a few ideas :

  1. Upcycle: Wear a used or hand me down wedding outfit that has been altered to perfection. It’s a special way to incorporate something borrowed, save money, and not buy something you will likely only wear once. You could even suggest guests wear clothing they already own, rather than purchasing something new for the day. #CheersToTheOutfitRepeaters

  2. Instead of confetti or glitter, try to make your own confetti by hole-punching dried leaves or dried flowers (pictured below)!

  3. When choosing a caterer ask about their compost/food waste. Local is always best! Also, buffets often lead to more food waste than a planned out 3 course meal. Who knew?

  4. Rather than plastic utensils, plates, cups, etc. see about renting reusable items. Or, if disposable is really the way you want to go, try compostable flatware.

  5. Cut flowers are often not grown organically, then thrown out after the ceremony. Consider using succulents or potted plants as decor and send them home with guests as favors. Or check in with local florists about how they source their flowers.
